    Tasting notes and favourites

    Blind tastings

Host or join a blind tasting in the Vinius app: taste without the label, compare notes with the table, reveal each wine and keep your note.

    Quick answer

    • In the app, open More, then Blind tastings under Tasting, and choose Host a tasting or Join with a code.
    • Whoever registers a bottle is the only person who knows what it is. Everyone else tastes blind, the host included.
    • You read the table's notes on a wine only once your own note is in and the round has closed.
    • At the reveal your note joins your own tasting notes with the wine attached, and your score and impressions are locked.

    What a blind tasting is

One person hosts. The wines are poured with the labels hidden, everyone writes a note and a guess, the table compares, and the host reveals the wine. You need no club or membership: it works for a club evening, for friends at home or just for you.

    Hosting a tasting

    1. Choose Host a tasting and fill in What are you calling it?, How many wines? (1 to 12) and, if you like, Where.
    2. Under How does everyone write? pick Simple (a score and a few words) or WSET (the full structured assessment at L2, L3 or L4). It applies to the whole table, so the notes line up.
    3. Switch on Invite Vinius to taste to seat a virtual taster that answers from what the catalogue knows about each wine.
    4. Tap Start setting up.

Set the table shows one card per wine. Register wine searches the whole Vinius catalogue, not only your cellar. A wine the catalogue does not know yet can be added without putting a bottle in your cellar. What you paid is optional: it only scores the price guess and appears at the reveal.

Guests who have joined can register the bottle they brought with Add my wine. Let the guests register every bottle and you taste blind too. To check a wine you registered, hold its card.

The gold button counts the wines still waiting for a bottle and becomes Start the tasting once every glass has one. Start anyway begins without them.

    Inviting people

    • The table code: six characters to read out, a QR code to scan, or Share link.
    • Invite tasters: search people on Vinius by name, or send an email invitation. Someone new signs up from the link and keeps their notes in their own account.
    • Add guest: for someone who will not use the app. You write their notes, and nothing is saved to an account.

Once everyone has a seat, tap Table is open on Your table code to lock the table.

    Joining a tasting

Choose Join with a code, type the six characters and tap Take a seat. The host's link or QR code opens the same screen with the code filled in. You need a Vinius account; on a computer, the link sends you to the app.

    How a round runs

    1. The host taps Pour this one.
    2. Everyone, the host included, taps Write your note and adds Your guess if they like: grape, country, region, year and price, all optional.
    3. Tap Submit my note. A submitted note cannot be changed. If your signal drops, the note stays on your phone and goes out once you are back online.
    4. The round closes by itself when everyone is in, or when the host taps Close the round.
    5. See the table opens Compare notes: the table's scores and guesses, and Where you disagreed, biggest disagreement first.
    6. The host taps Reveal. Every phone shows the wine, your guess scored line by line, and your score next to the table's and, where there is one, the score from people who saw the label.

Three switches on your note decide where it goes, and all three start on: Show my note to the table, Save it to my notes when the wine is revealed and Share with the Vinius community.

What stays hidden until the reveal

    • The name, producer, vintage and price of each unrevealed wine, from everyone except the person who registered it. The host gets no exception.
    • Other people's notes, until your own is in and the round has closed.
    • Vinius's reasoning. Its full note appears after the reveal, under What Vinius says.

    Guess points and awards

Guesses score points for the evening: grape 3, year 3 (1 within two years), region 2, price 2 within a quarter of what was paid (1 within half), country 1. Eleven is a perfect read. These points never count towards your Vinius points.

Once every wine is revealed, See the awards shows Tonight's awards, such as Sommelier of the night, Golden nose and Most wanted, when at least three people tasted blind. Share the evening makes a card with the tasting's name, host and wines. Nobody but the host is named, and ratings, guesses and written notes stay off it.

    What happens to your notes

    • At the reveal, a note with Save it to my notes when the wine is revealed on becomes an ordinary tasting note on that wine, dated on the day of the tasting and carrying its location, if the host gave one.
    • Your score and assessment are locked, so the note stays a record of what you thought before you knew. You can still fix your written notes and change who sees the note. Afterthoughts go under What did you think? on the reveal screen.
    • If you registered the wine, your note is saved as an ordinary note, without guess points.
    • Add to wishlist on the reveal screen puts the wine on your wishlist.
    • A note on a wine that is never revealed waits under Waiting for a wine on the Blind tastings screen. Attach a wine saves it as an ordinary note.
    • Notes written for a guest are not saved to any account.

The host can cancel the tasting until the first wine is revealed. A cancelled tasting saves nobody's notes. If you leave a tasting, your notes on wines not yet revealed disappear from the table.

    Who can do this

    • Every role: owners, admins, managers, staff and viewers can all host or join. The host's controls come from hosting, not from a role.
    • Phone app only. The web app has no blind tasting screens.
